Maintenance Apprenticeship Program: Hector’s Journey of Growth and Career Success

Before joining WinnCompanies, Hector Moreta was manufacturing pipes at a pipe fitting company. Skilled in carpentry but seeking a path toward long-term growth, Hector came across the Maintenance Apprenticeship Program through WinnCompanies’ Workforce Initiative Program with Connected Communities—and he knew he had found his next step.

The program, part of Connected Communities’ commitment to economic mobility and workforce development, provides participants with the tools, certifications, and hands-on experience needed to build sustainable careers in property maintenance. For Hector, it was a launchpad into a more fulfilling and stable future.

What followed was a true test of dedication. Each day, Hector commuted 4 to 5 hours roundtrip from Connecticut to Massachusetts. It wasn’t easy, but his decision to stay the course came down to one thing:

“Winn believed in me, and I wanted to prove they made the right investment.”

The Maintenance Apprenticeship Program combines hands-on technical instruction at The Peterson School and WinnResidential properties with virtual skill-building through Interplay Learning. Hector embraced every learning opportunity:

As long as you paid attention in classes and trainings, you could apply it all to real-life work. Every property taught me something new—not just how to fix things, but how to work with different kinds of people.

After graduating as part of Cohort 4 in October 2024, Hector advanced into a Maintenance Technician II role at Millpond Village, just minutes from his newly purchased home. He now enjoys the daily rewards of working with a supportive team while growing in his role.

Hector’s advice for new apprentices?

Show up and be ready to learn. Every property is different, and you need to adapt to the people and situations around you.

Hector now looks forward to further developing his skills in HVAC and continuing his career with WinnCompanies. His story is a powerful reminder that when we invest in people, we don’t just fill roles—we build futures.

At Connected Communities and WinnCompanies, we’re proud to stand behind passionate professionals like Hector – and to support their journeys every step of the way.
